Dr. Michel Hakim obtained his Doctorate in Dental Medicine (D.M.D)  from the Université de Montréal in 2002. During his studies, he won the prize from the Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology for maintaining the highest grades in that field.

In 2002-2004, Dr. Hakim completed a two-year General Practice Residency (GPR) certification in dentistry at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and at the University of Chicago. During his residency he furthered his knowledge in all aspects of dentistry and gained significant dental skills. He also spent one month in internal medicine, one month in anaesthesiology, in month in emergency medicine, as well as one month in maxillofacial surgery to enhance his medical knowledge.

His duties included handling all dental emergencies at the hospital such as  various dental traumas (broken and avulsed teeth), as well as important facial swellings due to dental and oral abscesses. He treated many hospitalized patients, including medically compromised patients (organ transplant, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, AIDS, HIV, haemophilia) or those requiring special attention such as children with autism or Down’s syndrome. He finally gained significant experience in dentistry under general anesthesia and intravenous sedation.

In 2003-2004, Dr. Hakim became the chief resident within the GPR program (General Practice Residency), affiliated to the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and at the University of Chicago. Within the scope of his official duties he:

  1. Worked at the hospitals’ dental clinics catering to all aspects of dentistry ;
  2. Managed more complex and potentially contentious cases ;
  3. Regularly delivered dental care to special needs patients under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation
  4. Supervised a group of 10 dentists and managed the dental emergencies as well as the hospital consultations related to dentistry within the hospitals.

 

During this period, Dr. Hakim was a presenter for the Clinical Tables Committee at the very prestigious Midwinter Meeting, organized by the Chicago Dental Society. In 2004, he received a new award, second place for Clinical Tables at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Upon his return to Montreal in 2004, Dr. Hakim was  hired as a clinician in dental diagnostics and emergencies at the Université de Montréal.  Since 2004  Dr. Hakim is a clinician in general dentistry at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal.

 

Dentistry is constantly evolving and therefore Dr. Hakim believes in furthering his knowledge through continuous education. Some of the courses he attended so far include

  • Course I and Course II in implantology at the Institut Canadien d’Implantologie ;
  • Private course in CEREC provided by Chris Leinweber, a well-known CEREC trainer
  • Introductory and advanced course at Dr Claude Martel’s CADCAM training center.
  • Numerous courses in cosmetic and adhesive dentistry, pediatric dentistry as well as oral surgery.

Dr. Hakim is a member of the Alpha Omega Dental Society, as well as the Ordre des Dentistes du Québec and the Association des ChirurgiensDentistes du Québec.
