With extensive experience in hospital settings, Dr Hakim has the necessary training and knowledge to deal with ALL types of dental emergencies. Whether you are a new patient or one of our regular patients, you will be seen as quickly as possible in order to assess your condition, alleviate your pain and provide you with the appropriate care.<\/p>\n

Some dental problems and pains cannot wait for your next dental check-up. The pain may increase and become unbearable or even lead to further problems as well as more complex and expensive dental treatments! An emergency visit to your dentist is important. The dentist is the only person qualified to diagnose and provide you with adequate care for your teeth and mouth. An oral exam is necessary to check that the pain in your mouth is not hiding a potentially dangerous underlying condition.<\/p>\n

It is recommended that you see your dentist quickly since treatment effectiveness can decrease if the lapse of time between the incident or on-start of pain and treatment is too long.<\/p>\n

A cracked or broken tooth <\/strong><\/div>\n

Although there are many causes for a broken or cracked tooth (trauma, cavities, biting on something too hard, etc.), the severity can vary greatly depending on which part of the tooth is affected. It is highly recommended that you see you dentist as soon as possible after the incident to increase treatment efficiency.<\/p>\n

Before proceeding with any treatment, your dentist needs to take an x-ray (or x-rays) of the affected area in order to have all the necessary information. If the nerve has been exposed or affected, the treatment will be more complex as the tooth will require a root canal treatment. If the root of the tooth is damaged, it is very possible that this tooth needs to be removed. If the tooth is badly broken or fractured, a crown or a CEREC crown would be the ideal treatment. If the tooth is simply chipped, a composite filling (tooth colored filling) or a\u00a0 simple polishing could be sufficient.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>

A tooth is avulsed when it is out of its tooth socket, meaning that it has been moved from its original location subsequent to the shock. To maximize the chances of being able to reset the adult tooth in its socket correctly, you have to act quickly and call your dentist right away.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>

A dental abscess is caused by a bacterial infection, in turn caused by a necrosed (dead) tooth or by an infection related to the gums. The causes for a dental abscess can be numerous: a large cavity affecting the nerve, a large filling, inadequate root canal treatment, untreated or uncontrolled gum disease, a badly broken tooth, etc. A dental abscess is considered a dental emergency and should be seen to as quickly as possible since it may harm your overall health. An untreated infection can cause important swelling, acute pain and even form a cyst and spread to surrounding tissues.<\/p>\n

Reversible or irreversible pulpitis<\/strong><\/div>\n

Pulpitis is a painful inflammation of the nerve within the tooth that has been affected by a deep carious lesion, tooth repair, or by a trauma. A pain\u00a0 aggravated\u00a0 by\u00a0 hot or\/and cold, a spontaneous pain that wakes you up at night, or a pain that irradiates or feels like a heart beat from within the tooth could indicate a pulpitis. Teeth grinding (bruxism) or clenching may occur unconsciously or while you sleep. This may lead to pain in your jaw, head, neck and ears. Symptoms may include:<\/p>\n

  • Difficulty opening your mouth or difficulty executing precise movements with your mouth;<\/li>\n
  • A cracking sound when opening your mouth\u2009;<\/li>\n
  • Your jaw locking when opening your mouth too wide or for too long.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    If the pain is caused by parafunctional habits (teeth grinding or clenching) or poor jaw alignment, an acrylic bite splint or night guard can be custom-made to fit your top or bottom teeth in order to properly balance pressure on your teeth. This bite splint or night guard is worn at night to reduce grinding and clenching while allowing your jaw to relax. This will reduce damage as well as wear and tear on your teeth.<\/p>\n
